INTRODUCTION:

This position is located in the Outdoor Recreation Division, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR), Join Base Pearl Harbor, Hickam (JBPHH).  The purpose of this position is to provide activity and trip planning, oversight of activity safety, maintenance of equipment, vehicles and facilities and to manage a comprehensive outdoor adventure program.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:   

  1. Plan, develops, coordinates, and conducts a variety of classes and trips in support of a diverse Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP).  Within overall plans developed by higher levels, selects activities and services to be offered in addition to required basic programs.  Schedules, publicizes and promotes various classes, trips, and other activities specifically targeting high-risk adventure programs.  Leads activities and groups on outing throughout the region by means of MWR vehicles, and provides reconnaissance scouting trips to investigate perspective program activities.  Meet with outside governmental land management agencies to establish access for activities.
  2. Ensures compliance with state and local agencies and their regulatory requirements.  Secures permissions and permits (if required) to designed program locations.  Develops and implements procedures to monitor, track and document program effectiveness and success.  Reports progress and makes recommendations on program planning, coordination and follow-up procedures to the Outdoor Recreation Director.  Monitors and tracks complaints and recommendations from customer surveys and satisfaction report; evaluates and ensures quality service and client satisfaction.
  3. Assist the Outdoor Recreation Director in planning, developing, and conducting an outdoor recreation training program, as well as a risk management plan.  Monitors the condition and inventory of OAP equipment and supplies used to support the program.  Requisitions new equipment and supplies.  Performs preventive maintenance on OAP equipment and assists in repairing and maintaining all recreation equipment assigned to Outdoor Adventure Activities.  Assists the Outdoor Recreation Director in providing vehicle support to the Outdoor Recreation Program. Plans and schedules assigned vehicles to support the needs of the Outdoor Recreation Program.  Requests and coordinates vehicle requirements from other sources when vehicles are unable to meet needs.  Assist the Outdoor Recreation Director in implementing an overall program on safety, maintenance, vehicle operations, and inspections or assigned non-appropriated fund vehicles.
  4. Assigns, directs, and reviews the work of assigned employees; eight NF-2 program coordinators, volunteers and interns.  Recruits, organizes, and trains part-time employees assigned to OAP, volunteers, interns and program coordinators. Assigns work, explains work requirements, methods and procedures to ensure proper accomplishment of assigned activities. Evaluates work performance of OAP staff.  Oversees a comprehensive college intern program, providing guidance, leadership and task.  Performs other duties as assigned.
  5. Displays courtesy, tact, and diplomacy with subordinate staff members, interns, and volunteers.  Ensures that the appropriate tasks are assigned to the skill level of employee/volunteer working with each specific outdoor adventure activity.  Ensures prior to releasing a vehicle that the operator/driver is properly licensed and briefed on safe vehicle operation and the requirements to preform daily vehicle inspections.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:  

A bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Hospitality, Leisure or related field or three (3) years of general experience in recreation is highly desirable.  Possess certificates or must be completed within 6 months after employment, Lifeguard Water Front Training, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification, and First Aid Certification.  Completion of Wilderness First Responder course, American Canoe Association membership, Ropes Course Certification, Climbing Wall Certifications, Leave No Trace membership, etc. are highly desirable.  Must possess a valid driver’s license.
